Alberta Horse Training

"With the help of good trainers and people with a passion for horses we can continue to make the equine world a positive and encouraging place, with willing partners by our side.”
... Jon Cooper

My colt starting program consists of 5 stages in which I start from stage one and progress through to stage five over a course of roughly one month. It is possible to move through the stages faster however to have a calm, willing and trusting partner, consistency and patience are key.

When training a colt or a horse that has little to no work done with him/her I strongly recommend a training period of at least two months, three months however would be ideal.

Many people feel that one month is enough to break or train a horse to ride and this is true, however to have a safe and reliable horse that you can feel comfortable with takes a little longer.

Horse Training Alberta For example you wouldn’t send your child to school for 2 out of the 12 years that are recommended or condense the 12 years of schooling into 2 years because they would get first an overload of information and second, retaining that information would be slim.

It is the same principle with horses, their learning carrier is for life and setting them up for success and laying down a firm foundation is very important.

In the first month of their training the horse is learning and experiencing new situations and receiving an over load of information.

It is in the months to follow that they begin to refine the maneuvers and become comfortable and responsive to our cues.
